Ants in the UK

There are a few types of ants that cause problems in the UK. The most common being the Garden Ant. These are attracted to sweet foods and will leave a trail of pheromones for other ants to follow. Left unchecked this can quickly cause an annoying and unhygienic infestation.

The tropical origins of the Pharaoh’s Ant means they look for artificial heat sources to survive. They can often be found in hospitals and grouped accommodations like hotels and blocks of flats. The feed on decomposing foods and as such can pick up and carry harmful diseases.

The Red Fire Ant is a red-brown colour and lives in colonies comprising of 100,000 or more ants, usually out in the open. They will sting humans and pets alike, which can be very painful and upsetting, especially to small children.

The Ghost Ant, often referred to as the black-headed ant, has a pale body and legs, giving the Ghost Ant its name. Like the Garden Ant they have a preference to sweet foodstuffs. There can be many queens in one colony, meaning different groups can break off and form their own colonies. It is important that the entire colony is dealt with to avoid re-infestation.

Tips to avoid an Ant Problem

  • always clear up spillages immediately and make sure there is no sticky residue
