Moles are widespread throughout Britain, living a solitary existence in a system of subterranean tunnels. While not dangerous or disease-carrying in the same way as rats, to many gardeners they are a real pest! Dealing with a mole problem is important as a single creature can quickly turn a perfectly manicured lawn into a Himalayan mountain range!

In the garden, raised ridges and mounds of loose, excavated earth - commonly known as mole hills -indicate the presence of moles. It only takes a couple of days to turn your perfect lawn into a scene from ‘Moonraker’ and mole activity can undermine plant roots in borders, indirectly causing damage or death. They make turf look unsightly and difficult to mow. Their burrowing can lead to subsidence, especially on lighter soils, and they can cause considerable damage to newly seeded lawns. Their activities can quickly destroy a lawn or playing surface - the amount of soil moved by one mole has been calculated to be the equivalent of a person moving 4 tonnes in 10 minutes from a depth of half a metre!
Moles have very powerful, shovel-like front limbs, used for burrowing underground and can tunnel up to 100 metres per night. They scour their network searching for food sources (commonly earth worms and grubs) that have dropped or entered into the tunnels. When a ‘victim’ falls into the tunnel, the mole will quickly run along to kill and eat it. Because their saliva contains a toxin that can paralyze earthworms, moles are able to store their still living prey for later consumption. They construct special underground ‘larders’ for just this purpose and researchers have discovered such larders with over a thousand earthworms in them.
